KUALA LUMPUR: Local animated comedy series, AstroLOLogy, has won a series of awards this year, including for Best Animation TV/ Web Series at the New York Animation Film Awards and the Award of Excellence — Best Animation at the Vegas Movie Awards last month.

The series, an original production by Malaysian company Lemon Sky Studios, features characters based on the 12 signs of the Western zodiac.

Each character has a unique personality and design inspired by the original star signs.

Available on YouTube, the AstroLOLogy episodes feature comedic interactions which naturally occur when these wacky personalities hang out with one another in their world.

Last February, AstroLOLogy won for Best Animation Short during the London Independent Film Awards.

The series also garnered multiple wins last March at the Los Angeles Film Awards (for Best Web Series), the Latitude Film Awards (Best Web Series), the Independent Short Awards (Best Children Short) and an Honourable Mention for Best Web Series at Global Shorts 2020.

In April, AstroLOLogy took home Best Animated Short Film at the Asian Cinematography Awards.

The series’ unique approach mixed with the universality of comedy has proven to be successful in attracting an international crowd as AstroLOLogy has been very popular amongst foreign viewers, particularly in the US.

The show is also often enjoyed by viewers of all ages as parents usually watch the episodes together with their children.

In a press statement today by Lemon Sky Studios, the worldwide distribution partner for AstroLOLogy, Imira Entertainment, said: “From the first moment we saw AstroLOLogy, we were impressed by its quality of production, as well as its eye-catching and spectacular 3D design. The series’ content concept is unique and differentiated, making it an attractive show for both broadcasters and other platforms.”

“The potential goes beyond children’s’ content-focused platforms and we firmly believe this is targeted to audiences of all ages, covering a large spectrum of tastes and appetites.”

Within three months of its launch, AstroLOLogy gained over 100,000 subscribers on its official YouTube channel.

Since then, it has accumulated a total of over 210 million views and 608,000 subscribers, with the most viewed AstroLOLogy episode garnering over 41 million views.

New episodes of AstroLOLogy are still available on YouTube and other platforms, with the series releasing localised episodes in particular countries.

In December last year, a special edition of AstroLOLogy with Japanese voiceovers was released to meet the demands of the Japanese market.

It received positive feedback after being broadcasted on the Japanese television channel J:COM.

In China, the Chinese media giant Tencent acquired the exclusive rights to broadcast the chinese version of AstroLOLogy on its streaming platform.

Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) vice president of Digital Creative Content, Hasnul Hadi Samsudin, said: “We are delighted to see Lemon Sky winning numerous accomplishments within a year. These awards and accolades are a strong testament to our continuous pursuit of excellence across the national digital creative content industry.”

“MDEC will continue to play an active role in supporting local companies like Lemon Sky Studios to achieve international recognition with the quest to establish Malaysia as the heart of digital ASEAN,” he said.
